Shield AI is currently developing the X-BAT, a concept for a fully autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) combat aircraft that promises a formidable range of over 2,000 nautical miles (around 3,700 kilometres). Billed as the world’s first AI-piloted VTOL fighter jet, it’s engineered to ditch the runway entirely, capable of scrambling from ships, remote islands, or austere forward bases. The company is aiming for maiden flights in 2026, with full production and operational readiness slated for 2029—so don’t expect your digital wingman to be clocking on for duty just yet.
